NFL: Super Bowl XLV

It's Terrible Towels vs. Cheeseheads in Super Bowl XLV, but before diving into the biggest game of the year, some huge Bengals news.

It was one of my happiest days as a Bengals fan when the Bengals fired offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski Monday. "Holy Crap." Oh, what a relief and as one of my friends said, "There is a God." To me this is almost as good as the Bengals winning the Super Bowl, emphasis on the almost though. Bengals fans have been calling for his firing for years, and on Monday, owner Mike Brown finally did something about it.

Listening to local sports talk radio this week, people have been calling in saying they are going to renew their season tickets for the sole purpose of not having to see Bob Bratkowski call plays. Pretty sad, but true. Bratkowski should have been fired three years ago, but better late than never. The real question is, will this keep QB Carson Palmer and RB Cedric Benson in Cincinnati?

Benson, who has been the teams leading rusher the pass two seasons, is a free agent and said he would not return unless Bratkowski was gone. Palmer has demanded Mike Brown and the Bengals for a trade and maybe not having to deal with Bratkowski will make him want to say. All of this is still up in the air and Bengals fans will just have to sit back and wait to see what Mike Brown does, which can be very frustrating.

Then on Thursday, the Bengals hired Jay Gruden, brother of former coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden, to be offensive coordinator. If it was Jon, I would be excited, but I didn't even know Gruden had a brother. Don't know if it was the right choice or not, but he comes from a strong football family and if he anything like his brother, the Bengals will be in good shape. At least it's a step in the right direction, but the Bengals still have a long, long way to go. With it being Super Bowl week, Bengals fans have to wonder if their team will ever be in the big game again. It's my greatest dream as a sports fan, to see the Bengals win the Super Bowl and I just pray that I'm alive to see it.

Super Bowl XLV
I think it's a safe bet that this Super Bowl will live up to the hype. The last three Super Bowls have been more than exciting, Super Bowl XLII with New York Giant WR David Tyree's helmet catch that helped knock off the undefeated New England Patriots, Super Bowl XLIII with Pittsburgh WR Santonio Holmes catching the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, I still don't think he got both feet down. Then last year in Super Bowl XLIV, with the Saints knocking off Peyton Manning and the Colts with a 4th quarter interception return. This year's Super Bowl features two of the most storied franchises in NFL history and it will not disappoint.

The Super Bowl is always one of the most watched television events of the year, last year's Super Bowl was watched by more people than anything else in the history of U.S. television, and that's because it's the ultimate championship game. Some people watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, or use it as a reason to throw a party and consume large amounts of alcohol, but my favorite thing about the Super Bowl is that it's where I fell in love with the game of football.

One of my first memories of watching football was when I young, was watching former Denver Broncos QB John Elway win Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII. I got interested in football by watching Bengals games with my dad, but since they were awful in the '90s I never got to see them on the biggest stage, and still haven't. So, the Denver Broncos became my next favorite team and John Elway became my favorite player.

Watching John Elway play football was a thing of beauty. I had never seen a guy play with such passion and leadership before in my life. Elway left everything on the field, he was fun to watch and he was a damn good quarterback. He had solid players around him, but he carried the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning the last one at the age of 38, which is still the record for the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. I fell in love with the game of football by watching John Elway play his best football on the ultimate stage, the Super Bowl.

John Elway went out on top, by winning the
Super Bowl in his last career NFL game,
at the age of 38.

The Super Bowl is more than just a football game, it's guys giving 110% on every play, in front of millions of people, on the biggest stage in sports and one of the biggest stages in life. The Super Bowl is the ultimate championship and why it's the greatest event on the sporting calender. As Vince Lombardi said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing," and in the Super Bowl the only thing that matters is who wins. No one remembers those who lost in the Super Bowl, just those who won it.

So, on Sunday I like the Green Bay Packers to go down in the history books, as winners of Super Bowl XLV. They have overcome enormous odds to get hear, from having fifthteen guys on injured reserve and having to win their last two or three games of the season just to get into the playoffs. Then winning three consecutive games on the road to clinch a spot in the Super Bowl, pretty remarkable.

Even though both the Steelers and Packers have great defenses, both ranked number one and two in the league respectively, I think it will be a high scoring game. Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers are going to have their hands full, but they can't both be stopped for the entire game. Rodgers has beaten the defenses of the Eagles, Falcons and Bears on the road this postseason and has been on fire for weeks. Ben Roethlisberger may have more rings, but it's about who is play the best right now, and that man is Aaron Rodgers.

On Sunday, Aaron Rodgers will finally get out from behind the shadow of Brett Favre and the Packers will bring the Lombardi Trophy, named after their former coach, back to Green Bay where it belongs. Packers beat the Steelers, 27-24, with Rodgers taking home MVP honors. As for who some of the NFL experts are picking, as well as celebrities, it's pretty even both ways.

Lots of predictions and we will see who is right Sunday night. I can't wait for Sunday, it's going to be one hell of a game and everyone will be watching.

Go Packers and please God let them win.
